Intro to the Walks

The walks and events plan is set out over the next few pages. We have tried to offer a range of walks over the 4 days from easy/leisurely through to strenuous/challenging. We have graded the walks as follows:

Easy – relatively short, only short steep climbs or descents, but these may be steep, always on good paths, leisurely pace (approx. 2mph + stops).

Moderate – Approx 7miles, some longer steep climbs/descents, usually on good paths, some challenges (eg. stream crossings by stepping stones, sustained climbs). Average speed of around 2mph including stops.

Strenuous – 10+ miles.  Long distances with some steep climbs and descents, not always on paths, average speed of around 3mph including stops. Full hill walking gear required.

Nidderdale is a steep-sided river valley, so don’t expect walks to be flat! Some of the walks, particularly on the high moorland routes, have patchy mobile phone coverage at best. You need to be aware that, in case of illness or injury, assistance may have to be sought the old-fashioned way, ie. on foot to the nearest landline, which will take time. Special Interest walks will be taken at a very leisurely pace with plenty of stops for explanation and discussion – the point is the interest, not the walk!

Walks are priced from £3 up to £15.  Wherever possible we will co-ordinate car sharing to starts (most of the walks are circular) as parking is sometimes limited in the dale.  For the linear walks transport is provided or covered in the cost of the walk. Please don’t try and book yourself on more than one walk per day because we can guarantee start times but not finish times! The walks are scheduled to allow 1 walk per day.

Note that under 16's must be accompanied by an adult who will be responsible for their care and safety. PBWF and walk leaders cannot accept responsibility for the care and safety of minors. Please check the walk details carefully to ensure that any young people (and indeed, adults!) have the experience and fitness to complete the walks. If you have any doubts, please contact us and we will advise.

Finally, remember that dogs (other than assistance dogs) are not allowed on the walks. We have had to make this decision due to the amount of livestock and game birds in the area, and not all dogs are as well behaved as yours! Please see the list below for local kennels that will take your dog for a day at a time.
